The last time Eric Radford has done burpees was four or five years ago but being forced to isolate has got him back into it. Radford and pairs figure skating partner Vanessa James were forced to get creative to stay fit as they were forced to isolate themselves for COVID-19. This comes only one month before the Beijing Olympics are set to start.

Radford would listen to his free skate music and do high-energy burpees for the entire four-and-a-half minutes. Radford explained “that’s definitely a good way to get your heart rate up,… But it was very difficult. It’s not the same type of motivation and it’s not the same type of energy when I’m in my bedroom doing burpees, trying to get my heart rate up.”

The final few weeks before an Olympic Games are critical for fine-tuning and being locked inside doesn’t help. Being trapped inside especially with having no symptoms is the last place any Olympic athlete would want to be. With the Omicron variant, many Canadian athletes are in isolation, including 11 members of Canada’s bobsled team.
