With Team Canada leading most of the game, their ideal start was taken away as host Japan managed to score a late goal Wednesday morning. The Group E opener finished in a 1-1 draw between the two nations with Captain Christine Sinclair scoring a goal in her 300th national team appearance.

The Canadian coach Bev Priestman said after the game “We knew we’d have a difficult game on our hands,… But credit to the group, they gave absolutely everything.” The goalkeeper for Team Canada Stephanie Labbe stopped a penalty shot early in the second half but had to leave the game early due to injury.

The Canadian team will return to the Sapporo Dome on Saturday to face chile. After that, their next game will be against Britain on Tuesday in the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium. Only eight teams will advance from the round-robin comprised of 12 nations. The finals are scheduled for August 6 at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium.
