The 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian actress will star as Kamala Khan in the upcoming series Ms. Marvel.  Vellani lives in Markham, Ontario and has entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe to portray its first Muslim superhero. The new series will be available for streaming on June 8.

Vellani explained “It feels a lot … just a lot of feelings, … To be in Toronto and celebrate this with all my friends and family is super weird. But yeah, I’m excited.” Vellani will also count as Marvel’s second South Asian hero and the first female one. In 2021, Kumail Nanjiani plated Marvel’s first South Asian hero in Eternals.

Despite the abundance of South Asian characters in Marvel comics, many films have limited these roles to supporting characters. This combined with other reasons has resulted in growing criticism about the lack of diversity for lead actors in superhero franchises.
