Officials in Toronto have issued an extreme cold weather alert as freezing temperatures are expected. Environment Canada also released a special weather statement for the Toronto area on Wednesday. They issued it because freezing temperatures may lead to icy conditions.

The national weather agency said that above freezing temperatures have moved across southern Ontario Wednesday morning. Highs today are supposed to be in the low to mid-single digits. A temperature of -2 C is expected in the afternoon and -16 C in the evening and can drop further to -20 C.

Environment Canada stated “Late this afternoon, a cold front will push through the region which will cause temperatures to abruptly drop below freezing in time for the evening commute,… Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become icy and slippery.”
