Individuals who wear makeup may be absorbing or be in contact with potentially harmful ingredients that stay around for decades. The study was conducted by researchers in the U.S., Canada, and Switzerland and they found the ingredients in common products such as lipstick and mascara.
The ingredients are known as poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and are rarely disclosed on labels. This makes them harder to avoid said the study which was published in the journal of Environmental Science & Technology Letters.
PFAS substances are part of a group of more than 4,700 human-made chemicals that have fluorine bonded to carbon. The chemical bond between the two is very strong making them hard to break down. Miriam Diamond, a University of Toronto professor who co-authored the research said “it’ll stick around for years actually. … Decades.”
Very few studies in detail have been done on PFAS, but the studies that have come out link the substance to a variety of health effects in humans and animals.
