On Thursday, a Northern California wildfire threatened thousands of homes and killed at least 3 people.

Many people have been critically burned, and the fire northeast of San Francisco has destroyed thousands of homes.

The fire has been burning for weeks and was 50 per cent contained, but between Tuesday and Wednesday, it grew six times its size as high winds gusting to 72 km/h drove a destruction path.

The winds finally calmed down on Wednesday, but the fire was only 24 per cent contained, and danger remained.

Since the middle of August, fires in California have killed 11 people, destroyed more than 3,600 structures, charred chaparral, burned old-growth redwoods, and forced evacuations in communities.
