Zhou Guanyu is set to become the first Formula One driver from China after signing a deal with Alfa Romeo. Zhou was able to step up from Formula Two, where he is currently second in the standings. He will partner with Valtteri Bottas when the 10-time race winner transitions from Mercedes for next season.

All 20 of the available places on the grid for the 2022 season have now been filled. Zhou used to be a test driver for the Alpine team and drove for them in a practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix in July. He is replacing Antonio Giovinazzi, after three years as a full-time driver for Alfa Romeo.

Zhou commented on his achievement saying “to be the first-ever Chinese driver in (F1) is a breakthrough for Chinese motorsports history. I know a lot of hopes will be resting on me and, as ever, I will take this as a motivation to become better and achieve more,”
