The federal government in Canada announced today it will let fully vaccinated American travellers into the country on August 9. The travellers will have to be American citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. flying for discretionary purposes. They must be fully vaccinated by one of the Health Canada approved vaccines 14 days before arriving in Canada.

The Canada-U.S. border has been shut down to non-essential travel since March 21, 2020. The restrictions were renewed each month since then. Unvaccinated American children under the age of 12 as well as unvaccinated dependent children will be able to travel with a fully vaccinated parent or legal guardian and have to do a 14-day quarantine. The U.S has not said anything on plans to lift restrictions for Canadians wanting to travel to the states.

Other nations with fully vaccinated citizens will have to wait till September 7 for Canada to announce if they will be allowed to travel to the country. Travellers will have to upload proof of vaccination to the ArriveCAN app or website before they board a flight to Canada. The government also announced today that expand the number of airports accepting international flights from four to nine.
