The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, is set to reveal the province’s new legislation for long-term care homes. Advocates for seniors explain this is a “now-or-never moment” for Ontario to improve the conditions in long-term care. The pandemic had devastating impacts on seniors living in these facilities as all the people living there are vulnerable.

The government pledged that this new bill will result in better accountability, enforcement, and transparency to the nursing home sector. The government has actually repeatedly promised new legislation before the pandemic even started. The Minister of Long-Term Care Rod Phillips announced the specific changes that will happen.

Phillips said Tuesday that Ontario plans to increase enforcement by doubling the number of long-term care inspectors. They will also mount proactive home inspections which were scrapped when the Ford government took office. CEO of AdvantAge, Lisa Levin, said “We need to transform the system… We are at a critical juncture now in long-term care.”
