Professional sports leagues are eager for backup players due to COVID-19, and Canadian athletes are making moves. A lot of them are university players that are unable to play at the moment because of university shutdowns. Most of the players pushing to go pro are in Atlantic Canada playing for Nova Scotia teams.

The executive director of Atlantic University Sport, Phil Currie said “There’s opportunities that have presented themselves, and then I guess they’re taking those opportunities,” The National Hockey League has been stressing about cancelling games as too many players are either sick or isolating. NHL teams are now able to pack their rosters with more players from lower professional leagues.

However, lower leagues now need to replace players being picked up by the National Hockey League. Already, the Acadia Axemen of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, has lost four players who signed pro contracts. The Dalhousie Tigers and Saint Mary’s  Huskies, both in Halifax, have lost two players each.
