Canada’s federal government has banned China’s Huawei Technologies from joining the country’s 5G wireless network. To get started it is important to understand what a 5G network is. The technology gives Canadians faster phone and internet connections as well as provides more data capacity amid increased demand.

5G relies on multiple antennas to transport signals quickly between locations. The difference in speed is only about 100 milliseconds, so you will not notice while making a call, surfing the internet, or using an app. However, the noticeable difference happens at a larger scale. The antennas used are much smaller and can actually be placed on buildings or street lights.

Rogers Communications Inc., Bell Canada parent BCE Inbc., and Telus Corp. have already started expanding their 5G network over the past few years. Huawei is being banned over privacy concerns. Government officials have argued that Huawei would allow China to spy on Canadians.
