Last night, the Maple Leafs hosted Montreal Canadiens in their first playoff match of the year. Toronto’s captain was taken to the hospital after an inadvertent knee to the head. John Tavares was taken off the ice on a stretcher after the collision happened.

Tavares was 10:29 into the first period when he crashed into Montreal’s Ben Chariot and was then hit in the head by Corey Perry’s knee as he fell. Trainers and doctors from both teams immediately rushed to give medical attention. The veteran wanted to get up but the medical staff was encouraging him to stay down.

Tavares was able to give a thumbs up while being wheeled off the ice surface. The head coach of Toronto Sheldon Keefe said after the event Tavares was “conscious and communicating well.” The Montreal Canadiens posted a statement on Twitter sharing their concerns and sending wishes for a speedy recovery.
