On Monday, a man disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa. After throwing the cake in the Louvre Museum, the man shouted at people to think of planet Earth. The cake left an eye-catching white creamy smear on the glass but the painting wasn’t damaged.

Guards were filmed escorting the 36-year-old man away from the crowd. The wig-wearing man shouted “Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”

Guards quickly began cleaning the cake from the glass. The painting is a 16th-century masterpiece and has been through a lot. In 1911 it was stolen by a museum employee and was also damaged by an acid attack in the 1950s. Since then it has always been kept behind glass.
