The moon rocks collected suggest volcanic activity on the moon happened 1 billion years later than thought. The moon rocks were collected by a Chinese robotic spacecraft and were brought to Earth last year. They have given scientists new insights into ancient lunar volcanic activity, according to a researcher.

Li Xianhua said the rocks have revealed information about the moon’s chemical composition and the way it developed with heat. Li explained that the volcanic activity was ongoing as recently as 2 billion years ago. The previous estimate suggested that volcanic activity ended between 2.8 billion and 3 billion years ago.

Li told reporters that “Volcanic activities are a very important thing on the moon. They show the vitality inside the moon, and represent the recycling energy and matter inside the moon,” The rocks bright back from China was the first rocks since the missions by the U.S. and the former Soviet Union in the 1970s.
