After being down two sets and facing a triple break point, Nadal searched for inspiration to come back and win his record 21st major title. Nadal dug his heel in at the critical moment and won the next four points to survive the immediate threat from Daniil Medvedev. Minutes after, Nadal held for 3-3 in the third set and swung the momentum of the Australian Open final round.

The match ended with a dramatic score of 2-6. 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 and lasted 5 hours and 24 minutes Monday morning. The 35-year-old Spaniard now has one more major title than Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The so-called Big Three have been long-time rivals and this adds some fire to the rivalry.

However, he was the only one of three who was able to compete at the Australian Open. Federer is still recovering from knee surgery and Djokovic was deported from the country before the tournament started. Nadal is the fourth man to win all four of the sport’s major titles at least twice.
