The federal government has announced plans to build a brand new high-frequency rail line. The system will connect Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. The plans for the project show the lines will reduce travel times between cities and make trains more reliable.

Omar Alghabra, the Transportation Minister announced the plans to passengers onboard a train saying “It will increase frequency for passengers like yourself and transform the connection between these cities,”

The trains on the proposed plans will run at higher speeds than currently possible. But the government is not considering it has “high speed” because it will fall short of the high-speed trains in Europe and Asia. In efforts to combat climate change, Alghabra said “Up top 90 per cent of the new service would run on electricity, contributing to the green economy and creating good jobs. The government said more funding will be required with a total of $491.2 million over six years.
