On Wednesday, social media platform Instagram allowed English language users to add gender pronouns to their profiles. This is meant to notify the user’s friends or followers of what pronouns to use in conversation with them.

In a tweet, Instagram said, “Add pronouns to your profile… The new field is available in a few countries, with plans for more.”

According to AFP in the United States, users can choose to have their pronoun choice shown publicly or just to friends and followers. Instagram also gave their users a range of pronoun options such as “them” and “theirs, as well as nonbinary pronouns like “co” and “ze”.
