The Ontario government is set to introduce legislation that will give delivery workers access to bathrooms at businesses they are delivering or picking up from. If passed, the legislation will apply to couriers, truck drivers, and food delivery workers. The news was shared Wednesday morning in a statement from Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton.

In a statement, he said “This is something most people in Ontario take for granted but access to washrooms is a matter of common decency currently being denied to hundreds of thousands of workers in this province,” He further explained that “Unfortunately, some businesses while trying to keep their operations running haven’t been treating you (delivery workers) as heroes. Some failed to recognize that you were vital to their success.”

Officials say the legislation will only apply to businesses where workers are either picking up or dropping off items. It will not be applicable to private residences so delivery workers cannot ask to use the washroom in someone’s home. The Ontario Trucking Associations said they are “thankful” in a statement for the proposed legislation.
