The Tokyo 2020 Games were delayed to 2021 due to the pandemic and became much closer to the starting date of the Winter Games. With less than six months to go, Beijing already began preparing and completing some of the venues for events. Similar to the Tokyo Olympics, there will be lots of debates and criticism directed at the Beijing Games.

Weeks before Tokyo 2020, the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo’s organizing committee were ridiculed for hosting a multi-sport festival while COVID-19 cases surge. With the Beijing Games scheduled to begin February 4, 2022, the novel coronavirus will most likely still be active around the world. The virus will impose many restrictions and different protocols, similar to the rules in Tokyo.

Other than the pandemic, there has been rising tension directed at China for itès human rights records. This has lead to many calls from various quarters to boycott the Beijing Winter Games in 2022. The United States is one of those countries, and they accuse China of genocide in how they treated the Uyghurs. Canada is also on its third year of trying to free Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig from detainment in China. China arrested them because Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested at Vancouver’s airport in December 2018.
