The chief medical officer of health is scheduled to hold a 1 p.m. ET news conference in Ontario today. According to the government, the conference will reveal the province’s plan to roll out COVID-19 booster shots. Last week, Christine Elliott, the Health Minister said the plan will have “information to all Ontarians on when they can expect to receive a third dose” of COVID-19 vaccine.
Also last week Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) advised booster shots for adults aged 80 and over. The committee explained there are other groups that may be at increased risk of decreased protection over time since the initial shot.
The groups of people it is referring to are adults between ages 70 and 79. People who received two doses of the AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD vaccine or one dose of the Hanssen vaccine. It also includes adults in or from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. Lastly, adults who are front-line healthcare workers who have direct in-person contact with patients and who were vaccinated with a very short interval between their first and second doses.
