On Friday, health officials in Ontario are reporting 11,899 new infections of COVID-19 however officials have warned the number is an underestimate. On Wednesday, the minister’s office called the increase in hospitalizations “explosive”. There are at least 2,472 patients in hospitals for COVID-19 and 338 people are in intensive care units.
The seven-day rolling average rose to 10,327 Wednesday which is the highest it has ever been in Ontario. The Ministry of Health says the positivity rate is at 26.6 per cent as it processed over 61,137 tests in the last 24-hour period. The province announced two weeks ago that anyone aged 18 and older can book an appointment for a booster shot starting today.
According to Ontario, 232 of the people in ICU with COVID-19 are either not fully vaccinated or have an unknown status. 106 of the patients in ICU are considered to be fully vaccinated. There were 2,405 new cases logged in Toronto, 965 cases in York Region, and 1,745 in Peel Region. The province also reported 742 cases in Halton Region, 656 in Ottawa, and 425 in Durham Region.
