The health minister said Ontario might be entering Step 1 of reopening “several days earlier” than supposed to. At Queen’s Park today, Christine Elliot told reporters that Ontario is “doing very well” in containing the spread of COVID-19. This could allow the province to reopen sooner than June 14.

Elliot explained that she does not think Ontario will be able to reopen a full week earlier but could be sped up by a few days. It is not clear when the final decision would be made as Elliot did not tell the public.

Step 1 would let Ontario relax restrictions primarily involving outdoor activities. Gatherings outside will be increased to 10 people, patios can open as well as non-essential retail stores at 15 per cent capacity. Elliot made it aware that Ontario is seeing a downward trend in daily COVID-19 infections.
