Residents in Ontario will be able to pick up a free box of rapid COVID-19 tests at select grocery stores and pharmacies. CTV News Toronto reported on Tuesday that the Ontario government will give out 5.5 million tests each week with a limit of one box per household. The government estimates up to 44 million tests will be made available over an eight-week span.
There will be at least 2,406 locations participating in the program, including 2,385 pharmacy and grocery locations and 21 “community lead agencies” The rapid tests will be available at grocery stores and pharmacies as of February 9. People can pick them up through online orders or in-store pickup.
The province’s COVID-19 testing strategy shifted in late December as an Omicron-fuelled wave of COVID-19 hit the province. At that point in time, demand for rapid tests increased as many Ontarians were trying to get a kit. Retailers participating in the program include Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Metro, Rexall, Sobey’s, and Longo’s.
