Ontario Plans to End Grade 9 Academic and Applied Course Streaming

Starting September 2022, Ontario students entering Grade 9 will no longer have the option of taking applied or academic courses. In the past, high school students were asked to choose between more practical, applied courses or more theoretical academic courses. The choice was only in core subjects like math, science, English, and others.

Some advocates have stressed that streaming can actually lead to dividing students rather than providing them with more options. In some cases, it can disproportionately impact racialized and low-income students. A spokesperson for Education Minister Stephen Lecce said “our government has continuously taken action to remove barriers for all students, including racialized children in Ontario.”

The spokesperson further said, “we will continue to take action to lift up all students, with an ambitious plan to support better pathways to the skilled trades, post-secondary, and good-paying jobs.” Currently, there is no timeline provided that would explain when the rest of the new courses will merge.
