Gyms, restaurants, and theatres are welcoming customers back for the first time in nearly a month. The province is now in the first step of its three-step plan to slowly ease public health restrictions. Retail stores, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and shopping malls, can operate with 50 per cent capacity indoors.

Restaurants, cinemas, and gyms are allowed to reopen at half capacity today after being halted on January 5. This was due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Museums, casinos, galleries, aquariums, zoos, science centres, landmarks, historic sites, botanical gardens, and other attractions can open at 50 per cent capacity.

Fergus Lally, a trainer and owner of the CrossFit UV gym in Markham, said “It’s nice to see a lot of people come in with smiling faces,… I think I speak for all small businesses … even though this doesn’t mean a return to full capacity, It’s nice to start to get things back to normal. Hopefully, it’s more positive signs from here on out.”
