Today a petition of more than 350,000 signatures asking for the Tokyo Games to be canceled. The petition was submitted to local organizers, the International Olympic Committee, and others. The campaign name is “Stop Tokyo Olympics” and was drafted by a well-known lawyer Kenji Utsunomiya.

As of right now, the Olympics are scheduled to commence in 10 weeks on July 23. Currently, the pandemic has forced Tokyo and other areas under a state of emergency. Only 2% of their population has been fully vaccinated and cases continue to rise.

Despite getting 350,000 signatures Utsunomiya said, “I think that tens of millions of signatures are really necessary.” A lot of the signatures come from concerns as hospitals are being pushed to their limits. Utsunomiya believes medical services will be diverted to the Olympics and away from the general public.
