With Russia’s latest rocket launch, a film crew was sent to space ahead of the U.S. project starring Tom Cruise. Russia’s Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft got set up to launch this morning from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. This mission sparked a broadcast spectacle because it combines the interest of space as well as the drama of reality television.

The film crew consists of three people which includes an actor and director who will be shooting the first film in space. They NASA to the punch, as they aim to create a U.S. film that will star Tom Cruise. The Soyuz vessel blasted off from Earth at 4:55 a.m. ET. Other than trying to achieve another space first, officials from Russia said the film could inspire movie audiences on the new possibilities of space travel.

The project has also received some criticism from within the Roscosmos, the Russian space agency. The movie has a working title of The Challenge and is about a surgeon who has to perform a life-saving operation on a cosmonaut. Yulia Peresild, 37-years-old, a well-known Russian actor was chosen for the role for the film.
