Austin, Texas will become home to the world’s largest community of 3D-printed homes. The project is scheduled to start next year and will feature 100 single-story houses. They will be “printed” on-site using advanced robotic construction and concrete-based building material.

Digital imaging of what the community will look like was unveiled last week. It displayed rows of houses with their roofs covered in solar panels. According to the firms behind the project, each home will only take approximately one week to build. Homebuilding company Lennar and a construction firm specializing in 3D-printing ICON, are collaborating for this project.

The homes have been co-designed by the Danish architecture practice Bjarke Ingels Group. The firm explained it can produce homes up to 3,000 square feet in size. ICON’s CEO and co-founder, Jason Ballard, described the project as a “watershed moment in the history of community-scale development.”
