The Olympic gold medal match between Canada and Sweden will now begin Friday at 9 p.m. local time. In Canada, people can watch at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. They will also play at the Yokohama Stadium instead of the Olympic Stadium because other events will be active. It was originally scheduled for 11 a.m. but both teams and Olympic committees were concerned about extreme heat at that time.

Temperatures have been blazing in Tokyo, specifically, at certain times of the day, it would feel above 40 C with humidity. Track and field events will be taking the spotlight Friday night at the Olympic Stadium which is why women’s soccer had to change venues. Canada’s coach Bev Priestman said the team would’ve played at any time of day but this was the right decision.

Priestman explains “It’s a gold-medal match. They would have played morning, night. They were ready… But I think the change makes absolute sense for the spectacle of what games could be.” Peter Gerhardsson, head coach of Sweden said it was “a very, very, very, very, very, good decision.”
