Sales in the electric vehicle market increased throughout the pandemic despite a global shortage of computer chips. According to the data from consultancy LMC Automotive, the global sales of battery electric vehicles increased to 4.5 million last year from 2.1 million in 2020. Specifically, electric cars made up 6.3 per cent of global vehicle sales in 2021, tripling their market share from 2019.

Passenger vehicle sales have remained lower, with under 72 million rolling-off dealer lots worldwide. More than 80 million passenger vehicles were sold in 2019. Al Bedwell, the director of global powertrain at LMC Automotive said “certainly, in Europe and certainly China … very often it was low emission, a new generation of electric vehicles that got prioritized because they’re the ones that were needed,”

Governments worldwide have increased pressure on automakers to reduce carbon emissions and shift production towards electric vehicles. Sometimes automakers are offered emission credits for electric vehicles or paying for charging points.
