Doctors in Tokyo are calling for the Olympic Games to be canceled this year. A top medical organization is supporting these doctors and said hospitals are already at their limits as the country combats a rise in COVID-19 infections. All of this is happening in less than three months from the start of the Games.

The Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association said they “have their hands full and have almost no spare capacity”, as they represent roughly 6,000 primary care doctors.  The association sent a letter to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga so that authorities can convince the IOC(International Olympic Committee) to cancel the Games.

The rise in infections influenced Tokyo and other prefectures to extend their state of emergency to May 31. Only about 3.5 percent of Japan’s population has been vaccinated. With the summer months around the corner, medical staff will be even busier due to an increase in heat stroke in people and patients.
