The increasing COVID-19 cases in New York have delayed the Westminster dog show which usually happens in January. Aspiring pooches and their owners will have to wait for the next annual dog show, according to the kennel club. This is one of the latest events to be delayed or cancelled in New York as COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

On December 26, Johns Hopkins University reported a record high of 82,350 new cases of COVID-19. That figure dropped all the way to 47,100 on Tuesday, officials said. The club made the announcement on Wednesday and the board of governors said they “made the difficult decision,… due to the surge of the Omicron variant in New York City.”

The kennel club said it will announce a new date “when we can safely convene,” Most of the competitors of the dog show are primarily in the U.S., however, there are a few Canadians and people from other countries. Earlier this year, the dog show was moved to June, to a riverside estate north of New York City.
