As frigid temperatures are expected overnight, an extreme cold weather alert is in effect for Toronto. Wednesday’s high is 2 C and the temperature is forecasted to drop drastically overnight. Environment Canada said the temperature will drop to -11 C overnight and it will feel like -19 C with the wind chill in Toronto.

Extreme cold weather alerts are usually released when temperatures are forecasted to reach -15 C or colder or when the wind chill is anticipated to hit -20 C. In a release, the city said “ECWAs are issued to ensure Toronto residents take necessary precautions to stay safe from the cold. They also activate local services that focus on getting and keeping vulnerable residents inside,”.

There will be four warming centres across the city for vulnerable residents. They will be located at 129 Peter St., 5800 Yonge St., Exhibition Place, Better Living Centre, 195 Princess’ Blvd., and Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr. Warming centres will usually remain open until noon on the day an alert is terminated.
