Bees have a uniquely high sense of smell and Dutch researchers have trained them to detect COVID-19. The insect is able to identify samples of the virus, which they say can shorten the time for test results to seconds.

The bees were trained at Wageningen University in their bio-veterinary research laboratory. Scientists would offer them sugary water as a reward for being shown samples infected with COVID. The bees received no treat if being shown a non-infected sample.

According to the researchers, the bees will extend their tongues in a straw-like shape if the subject is infected with the Coronavirus. The bees think they will get a treat due to the training they went through. The method is also cheap and can be beneficial for countries where tests are limited.
