Denis Shapovalov reached his first Australian Open men’s singles quarter-finals and was shortly joined by fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime knocked out 2018 finalist Marn Cilic in a tight match where he was down. He turned the match around in the second half with the sets scoring 2-6, 7-7 (7), 6-2. 7-7 (4) in favour of the Canadian.

Canadians have reached the Australian Open quarter-finals many times, but this is the first time two Canadians have done it in the same year. This is also the third Grand Slam tournament in a row in which Auger-Aliassime has reached at least the quarter-finals. Denis Shapovalov certified his spot in the quarter-finals before Felix Auger-Aliassime did.

Auger, Aliassime is expected to play Wednesday against the No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev knocked out American Maxime Cressy in the dreaded Melbourne heat. Medvedev is attempting to become the first man in the Open era to win his second major singles title in the next Grand Slam event. Shapovalov will be facing off against Rafael Nadal on Tuesday.
