Canadians will not be able to travel through the U.S. land border for non-essential travel until at least August 21. The renewal order was issued by the American government Wednesday and says that while vaccination rates are up, opening the land border for non-essential travel will pose too much of a risk.

This new order is scheduled to expire one minute before midnight on August 21. It also comes a few days after the Canadian government said they will open up the land borders to fully vaccinated American citizens on August 9. Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said “There are a number of considerations that I know that the American government is currently undertaking with respect to their border and that work will continue,”

Businesses along the border have been hoping for the borders reopening according to Brian Higgins,  a democratic congressman. It is uncertain what the U.S. government will go after this new order expires on August 21.
