Doug Williams, an IT expert, used his SpaceX Starlink Satellite system to reconnect emergency teams to the internet. When the devastating storm hit the town of Uxbridge, Ontario, residents stepped up to help first responders who were bombarded with calls for help in the township.

However, the emergency management team was struggling due to the feeble internet and cell services at the Uxbridge fire hall. Kristy Honey, the town’s chief administrative officer and head of emergency operations centre said “we were paralyzed, … We literally had people in cars to mission control to discuss key operations.”

Using actual people to relay messages instead of phone or text is a common practice when all communications are down.  Doug Williamson, runs his own IT company, called WillX and he had an idea to use Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellites to establish a better internet connection. Williamson said within 30 minutes of setting up, he was able to establish a clear connection and emergency teams were able to communicate.
