Canadian airlines have started offering flights at prices rarely seen before. An expert told The Canadian Press that there is a plan behind these massive discounts and they will not stay for long.
Currently, on Westjet, it will cost $117 to fly one way from Toronto to Calgary. If you were to go to Vancouver from Toronto it will only cost $10 more. That being said, a non-stop flight to Kelowna from Toronto would only be $134. These deals are not just during the lockdown, but on the airline’s website, the deals go until the end of 2021.
The director of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism at Ryerson University, Frederic Dimanche says “It’s time to buy your tickets if you want to get them cheap.” He believes these airlines are giving deals for a variety of reasons. Dimanche calls their strategy “price elasticity,” which is when a business lower’s its price on a product or service to increase demand.
Dimanche also believes that the deep discounts are to generate more travel confidence in Canadians. If people tell friends and people when they book a flight, it can help build confidence among Canadians. But as soon as demand increases the discounts will fade away, says Dimanche.
