Women’s Tour de France has been on pause for the past 33 years and is set to return in 2022. Christian Prudhomme, the race director says the event will be held after the men’s Tour de France. He further explains it was meant to happen in 2021 but the pandemic has prevented them from organizing.

The last women’s Tour de France was held from 1984-1989 and was ended due to financial instability. Prudhomme said they need to make sure the event will not losing money to having a permanent calendar slot.

Prudhomme wants to set up a race that will “live for 100 years”. In order to do that he scheduled the event right after the men’s race. This ensures that the majority of channels that broadcast the men’s Tour de France will also broadcast the women’s.
